Dr. M. Swapna Reddy is the HOD for Department of Pharmacognosy. She has 12 years of teaching and research experience. She has obtained B. Pharm degree from KU in 2003, M. Pharm degree from KU in 2009 and PhD degree from Sri Padmavati Mahila VisvaVidyalayam (Women’s University), Tirupati in 2020. She is involved in teaching and research in the areas of Phytopharmacology and Phytochemistry. She has about 10 research paper publications in UGC, Scopus indexed and Science direct journals. She has presented research papers in about 15 National & International conferences across India. She is the recipient of best oral presentation during the ETIPS, held at JNTUH in 2017. She has guided for about 60 B. Pharm students and 10 M. Pharm students. She has attended various workshops and faculty development programs in India. She is involved in teaching, research, various administrative-accreditation activities, Incharge for examination branch and Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy.
Pharmacognosy is an important discipline in the Pharmacy curriculum and deals with the study of crude drugs that includes plants, animals and marine sources. The subject has played a diverse role in the discovery, characterization, production and standardisation of crude drugs. In the recent past, the world has witnessed a tremendous renewal of interest in natural products in the area of drug discovery, cosmeceuticals and neutraceuticals. Pharmacognosy now encompasses many fields like botany, ethanobotany, marine biology, microbiology, alternative medicines, chemistry, pharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmaceutics, clinical pharmacy and molecular biology and has a multidisciplinary approach.
The department is engaged in undergraduate teaching and has a well equipped laboratory and medicinal garden. The garden is well maintained with the help of a horticulturist. Presently the garden houses various medicinal plants that have value in the field of medicine and cosmetics
The department has sophisticated instruments like Microscope with image analyser, Rotavac evaporator, Moisture balance that can be used for research activities associated in the field of Pharmacognosy.
Department is also engaged in exploring the pharmaceutical profile of medicinal plant products. Based on the concept preclinical evaluation of many formulations for their antiarthritic, antiacne, immunomodulatory, wound healing activities have been carried out. Classical Pharmacognostic and Phytochemical methods are used for standardization of herbal preparations.
